Some Old Customs : The Church Porch Watch

The old custom known as the “Church Porch Watch” was a common practice in Wales, as well as some area of England, up until the last part of the nineteenth century.

At midnight on Ocober 31, those who wished to find out who was going to die in the village in the coming year would meet in the church porch and stay there all night, keeping a watch for the ghosts of those who were marked by Death to come and knock on the church door.

Throwing the Shoe

The Irish have a very easy way of finding out the future with a practice known as ‘throwing the shoe’. If a person wants to know his future, he takes off one of his shoes on that night and tosses it over the roof of his home. If the shoe lands on the earth pointing away from his home, then this is a sign that the wearer of the shoe will be travelling in that direction soon .

If, however, the shoe lands on the earth but is pointing towards the house, then there is no travel for the wearer in the following year. It is considered good fortune if the shoe lands with the sole down. However, if the shoe lands with the sole up, then this may be a sign of impending bad fortune or even death.

Another future-telling involving shoes gets a girl to take off her shoes when she goes to bed on that night and to place them at right angles to form the letter T. The following poem must then be repeated:

I cross my shoes in the shape of a T;
Hoping that this night my true love to see,
Not in his riches or his worst array,
But in the clothes he wears every day.

The apparition of the girl’s future husband is then supposed to appear by her bed or come into view if she glances over her right shoulder. Often, he will appear to her in a dream. If no there is no apparition then this means that she will not marry before the next year.
